MODALS - CAN AND MUST
MODAL VERBS
What are modals?
- They are special verbs which behave differently from normal verbs.
What are the differences?
- Firstly, we do not use ''s'' in the third person (e.g. She can cook. He must go now.)
- Secondly, we use ''not'' to make modal verbs negative (e.g. You should not eat it!)
- Thirdly, we do not use modals in the past tenses or the future tenses (e.g. They
willcan stay at home)
What modal verbs are there?
Can Could May Might Must Shall Should Ought to Will Would

QUESTION TAGS - GRAMMAR
QUESTIONS TAGS - GRAMMAR
Las "questions tags", también llamadas "tag questions", son pequeñas preguntas que decimos al final de una oración (afirmativa o negativa) cuando queremos que nuestro interlocutor muestre acuerdo o desacuerdo, o bien para preguntar lo que no sabemos.
Equivalen a nuestro ¿no? ¿verdad? ¿no es así? ¿no es cierto? Y son muy comunes tanto en español como en inglés.
Normalmente se usan en el lenguaje informal, por eso se contraen.
Ejemplos:
-You are American, aren't you?Eres Americano, ¿verdad?
-She doesn´t work on Saturdays, does she? Ella no trabaja los sábados, ¿no?
¿Cómo se forman las "Question Tags"?
1) Verbo auxiliar + pronombre:
Para formar la "question tag" utilizamos los verbos auxiliares (be, have, do, will, would, can could, etc…) y a continuación el pronombre personal sujeto.
Ejemplo:
-Mary is at home, isn't she?
Excepción: con I am, hacemos la question tag, aren´t I?
-I am right, aren't I? (no: am not I) Tengo razón, ¿no?
-I am not mistaken, am I? No estoy equivocado, ¿verdad?
El auxiliar debe concordar con el verbo de la oración principal, es decir, si el verbo está en pasado, el auxiliar irá también en pasado.
-You liked the movie, didn't you? Te gustó la película ¿no?
2) La ley de los contrarios
En oraciones afirmativas, la question tag va en negativa:
- You speak English, don't you? Hablas inglés ¿no?
Y en oraciones negativas, la question tag va en afirmativa:
-You haven´t got a pet, have you? Tienes una mascota, ¿verdad?
Excepción: Cuando en la oración principal usamos palabras negativas como “nothing”, “no one”, “nobody”, “no” “never” “hardly” “scarcely” and “little” la question tag deberá ser afirmativa.
Ejemplos:
-Nobody likes the food, do they? A nadie le gusta la comida, ¿verdad?
- We´ll never forget that day, will we? Nunca olvidaremos ese día, ¿verdad?
Otras particularidades:
-Con “somebody” “anybody”, “nobody” “someone” “anyone”, “no-one”“everbody” “anyone”, la question tag llevará el auxiliar en plural y el pronombre sujeto "they", aunque en la oración el verbo esté en singular.
- Nobody knows what happened, do they? Nadie sabe lo que pasó, ¿verdad?
- Everybody wanted to go to the concert, didn't they? Todo el mundo quería ir al concierto ¿verdad?
-Con “everything”, “anything”, “nothing”, “something” ponemos "It" en la question tag.
-Everything is all right now, isn't it? Todo está bien ahora, ¿verdad?
Después de "let's", se coloca la "questión tag" "Shall we"
-Let's have a pizza, shall we? Tomemos una pizza, ¿no?
-"There" puede ser el sujeto en una question tag:
-There isn´t any rice left, is there?
-Con el imperativo,
En negativo ponemos la question tag "will you"? Y la orden se convierte en una petición cortés:
Ejemplos:
- Don't be late, will you? No llegues tarde, ¿vale?
En afirmativo ponemos la question tag "won't you?", y la orden se convierte en invitación:
-Have another piece of cake, won't you? Tómate otro trozo de pastel, ¿no?
